Estimation of residual kidney urea clearance: Equation can be assumed to be valid

The purpose of this study published in NDT was to explore the precision of an equation designed to estimate residual kidney urea clearance (KRU) from interdialytic urine collection data and pre-hemodialysis (HD) serum urea nitrogen (SUN) in different hemodialysis treatment schedules. The study showed that the equation can be assumed to be valid: it gave relatively precise results for a wide range of HD treatment schedules, intradialytic intervals and urine collection periods.

See you soon?! What factors are predictive for readmission?

A study in CKJ investigated reasons for admission and predictors of national 30-day readmission rates in patients with end-stage renal disease on peritoneal dialysis. The top 3 reasons for initial hospitalization were implant/PD catheter complications (23.22%), hypertension (5.47%), and septicemia (5.18%). Independent predictors of readmissions were age 35–49 years (compared with 18–34 years), female gender, and comorbidities including liver disease, peripheral vascular disease and depression. As the authors conclude, targeted interventions towards these patients may be of benefit in reducing readmission in this growing population.
