Immunonephrology Working Group: collaboration and education

The Immunonephrolgy Working Group (IWG) is one of the first active Working Groups under the umbrella of the ERA-EDTA. The group has been running important collaborative studies (i.e. the POST-VALIGA collaborative network for IgA nephropathy).

The IWG has recently agreed to start a research collaboration with the Vasculitis Group of the Japanese Society of Nephrology in four areas related to nephro-immunology: ANCA vasculitis, renal biopsy registries, Lupus nephritis and IgA nephropathy. A first pilot project will be launched in 2017 and will focus on the comparisons of renal biopsy registry data on patients who have undergone, renal biopsy due to acute/subacute nephritic syndrome.

The IWG is also committed to education and with the organisation of  a CME course on Renal implications of advances in immunology and inflammation to be held in Malmö (Sweden) on September 19-20, 2017 in collaboration with the Swedish Society of Nephrology (SNF) and the Mayo Clinic (USA). The course focuses on recent achievements in the field of immunology and inflammation. The low fee registration deadline is August 15, 2017.

SHPT control with native vitamin D in predialysis patients

A common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT). Calcidiol [25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D)] insufficiency (below 75 nmol/L) may accelerate the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). The primary aim of this study was to determine if treatment with high-dose cholecalciferol (8000 IU/day as oral drops) for 12 weeks in CKD Stages 3–4 patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) resulted in differences in change in PTH levels as compared with placebo. The authors have found that treatment with high daily doses of cholecalciferol in patients with CKD Stages 3–4 halts the progression of SHPT and does not cause hypercalcaemia or any other side effects.

Food frequency questionnaires are useful in assessing sodium intake

In clinical practice, dietary sodium assessment requires reliable and rapid screening tools. In this study, the usefulness of two food frequency questionnaires (Derby Salt Questionnaire and Scored Sodium Questionnaire) in estimating dietary sodium intakes in haemodialysis patients was evaluated. 139 haemodialysis patients (95 men) completed the questionnaires. Both questionnaires were acceptable to patients. The study showed that men had higher estimated dietary sodium intakes [DSQ median (range) 3.6 (0.6–10.1) than women 2.2 (0.5–9.1), P = 0.007)] and that aged patients >75 years had the higher dietary sodium scores.
