WGIKD for the education of the future generations of adult and paediatric nephrologists

The Working Group on Inherited Kidney Diseases (WGIKD) is fully committed (since 2011) to the health care of patients, often children, affected by inherited kidney diseases by generating and diffusing new scientific knowledge at a European level. The group is currently endeavouring collaboration with the European Reference Network for Rare Kidney Diseases (ERKNet) and developing a European Rare Renal Diseases Registry.

Priority is also given to education of the future generations of both adult and paediatric nephrologists with interest in inherited kidney diseases. A CME on Multidisciplinary management of inherited kidney diseases will be held on September 21-22, 2017 in Barcelona (Spain) and will be organised in collaboration with the Fundacio Puigvert (celebrating its 50th Anniversary). The event will offer the attendees the opportunity to get the novel insights into multisystem inherited kidney diseases and take advantage of case discussions with renowned faculty members.

Impaired peak cardiac performance in CKD patients

Heart failure (HF) is highly prevalent and associated with high mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the pathophysiology of cardiac dysfunction in CKD, especially in the early asymptomatic stage, is not well understood. In this cross-sectional study, 70 male non-diabetic CKD patients (21 CKD stage 2–3a, 27 CKD stage 3b–4 and 22 CKD stage 5) were matched to healthy male volunteers and were compared. The study subjects showed a graded reduction in peak cardiac power and cardiac functional reserve in asymptomatic CKD patients.

Uncertain clinical benefit gained from referral to the nephrology clinic for the majority of elderly patients

In this study published in CKJ, retrospective data of 124 patients >80 years of age who had CKD stage 4 or 5 were analyzed. The idea was to evaluate if elderly patients benefit from a referral to a nephrology clinic. Outcomes of interest included the rate of decline in eGFR, renal-specific management implemented by the clinic, need for renal replacement therapy and death. This study highlights the uncertain clinical benefit gained from referral to the nephrology clinic for the majority of elderly patients and suggests that for many cases their care could be safely and appropriately managed in the primary care setting.
