Dear Reader,

We are now approaching our 100th issue and would like to hear your opinion about ERA-EDTA Flash (formerly known as “Follow Us Flash”). Our first issue was released on May 2013 and changes have continuously been made (i.e. introduction of a more colorful logo, a more dynamic layout, promotion of hot papers appearing on NDT and CKJ and fresh news from the ERA-EDTA Working Groups) but the main scope remained the same: being the major source for news about ERA-EDTA‘s activities as well as European Nephrology.

Moved by the constant efforts of providing a better service and very keen on receiving constructive criticism by the ERA-EDTA Flash readership, we kindly ask you to complete the survey below (just two questions!) and tell us more about YOU as a reader of ERA-EDTA Flash.

You will be providing us with important information so that, with your help, we can improve the future issues of ERA-EDTA Flash. We really would like to know why you read ERA-EDTA Flash and what is your reaction when you read it.

We thank you for your time and kind collaboration!

Best wishes,
Prof. Mustafa Arici
ERA-EDTA Flash Editor in Chief

Prof. Andrzej Więcek

Remind your patients, their relatives and the policy makers in your country: Obesity threatens kidney health!

This year, World Kidney Day promotes education about the harmful consequences of obesity and its association with kidney disease, advocating healthy lifestyle and health policy measures.
“ERA-EDTA is supporting World Kidney Day and is calling on its members to spread the theme "Healthy lifestyle for healthy kidneys!”, explains Professor Dr Andrzej Więcek, president of the ERA-EDTA.
“Nephrologists should remind patients and their relatives that obesity enhances kidney function decline in CKD patients who are not on renal replacement therapy. Vice versa, losing weight can slow disease progression – and we have to inform our patients about this interrelation. If patients know that the dependence on dialysis can be postponed for a few months or even years just by slimming down and adapting a healthy lifestyle, they will be highly encouraged to do so.”

Prof. Carmine Zoccali

World Kidney Day Editorial in ndt – a “must read”!

Dr. Csaba Kovesdy, Dr. Susan Furth and Dr. Carmine Zoccali have written an editorial with the title “Obesity and kidney disease: hidden consequences of the epidemic” that appeared in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation [1]. The paper focuses on the relationship between obesity and kidney disease and is a “must-read” for all colleagues. It gives detailed information about the pathomechanisms behind obesity and how it harms kidney tissue.
In the article the authors revealed a shocking news: Between 1986 and 2000 incidence of obesity-related glomerulopathy increased by a factor of ten! But since the year 2000 the number of obese people has kept rising – therefore a further increase of obesity-related kidney damages is very likely. Consequently, it is high time that health policy measures are taken.

Karin Kadenbach

Active support: Karin Kadenbach, Member of the European Parliament, raises awareness of CKD

MEP Karin Kadenbach, Chair of the MEP Group for Kidney Health, and Miroslav Mikolaaus co-chair, took the opportunity to inform their colleagues in the European Parliament about the interrelation between obesity and CKD on world World Kidney Day and, thus, raised awareness of the importance of kidney health, the growing prevalence and the societal burden of CKD. Both MEPs contributed with an editorial in the current issue of The Parliament Magazine which focuses on World Kidney Day. Ms. Kadenbach and the MEP Group for Kidney Health closely collaborate with EKHA, the European Kidney Health Alliance, of which ERA-EDTA is a core member.

Free Access to “Kidney Disease and Obesity Articles” from NDT and CKJ for World Kidney Day 2017

In support of World Kidney Day (WKD) on March 9, Carmine Zoccali and Alberto Ortiz, the Editors-in-Chiefs of Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (ndt) and Clinical Kidney Journal (ckj) respectively, have selected a collection of articles focusing on this year’s theme, Kidney Disease and Obesity. All the articles included in this collection are freely available online until May 31.

Get a full picture of World Kidney Day – here are ERA-EDTA´s Photo Contest Winners

To celebrate World Kidney Day, ERA-EDTA organized a Photo Contest. People were asked to upload a photo which must somehow be related to the theme of “Kidney Disease & Obesity”. Many great photos were submitted and it was really hard to pick the winners.
