Interview with an ERA-EDTA Alumnus

1. Welcome, we would be very interested in a brief summary of your experiences before your ERA-EDTA Fellowship.
I was a PhD student in Hypertension, the principal investigator of the renal artery calibre and cardiovascular risk in patients with renal artery stenosis, University of Catania, Catania, Italy and co-investigator of the RAS-CAD trial. Moreover, I was the winner of the 2008 and 2009 bourses to participate at epidemiological courses of the Italian Society of Nephrology and of the 2008 and 2010 “Best abstracts presented by young authors” at the annual congress of the ERA-EDTA.

2. Have you kept in contact with the ERA-EDTA and its initiatives after you completed your ERA-EDTA Fellowship Programme? (e.g. your Supervisors’ indication, ERA-EDTA website or journals like NDT and CJK, etc.).
Yes, I am still participating at the annual meeting of the ERA-EDTA and I have published a paper in NDT on baroreflex activity.
Boutouyrie P, Zanoli L, Briet M, Karras A, Delahousse M. Baroreflex sensitivity after kidney transplantation: arterial or neural improvement? Nephrol Dial Transplant. 2013;28(10):2401-3.

3. What was your Fellowship experience like (positive and/or negative aspects and any suggestions to improve this initiative for others)?
Absolutely positive. During the two years of the fellowship I learned advanced and sophisticated techniques for the study of arterial structure and function. All of these techniques, and the corresponding devices, are now available and used in my current daily research activity at the University of Catania.

4. Did your Fellowship project end at the Host Institution or was it  followed by a series of related projects performed in your Home Country?
Currently I have several ongoing projects with the Host Institution and a collaboration between my current (Department of Internal Medicine, University of Catania) and  past institution (INSERM U960, Equipe 7, Paris, France).

5. Were the results of your ERA-EDTA Fellowship  published? If yes, can you tell us in which  journal(s)?
Yes, the results of my ERA-EDTA Fellowship was published in the “Journal of Hypertension” and “Nephron Extra” journal.
Zanoli L, Rastelli S, Marcantoni C, Blanco J, Capodanno D, Tamburino C, Castellino P. Reference renal artery diameter is a stronger predictor of contrast-induced nephropathy than chronic kidney disease in patients with high cardiovascular risk. Nephron Extra.

6. Have you been able to implement what you have learned in your Home Country? If yes, please explain in few words what and how:
Yes, as previously reported, all the advanced techniques for the study of arterial structure and function learned at the Host Institution are currently available in my current department. My current activity is focused on the study of the link between arterial structure and function and chronic inflammation. Moreover, I am implementing at the university of Catania a new technique for the non-invasive study of the baroreflex activity with a  new software coupled with an ultrasound device.

7. Were there promising developments in terms of new international collaborations for you personally after the ERA-EDTA Fellowship?

Yes, now I am collaborating with the Host Institution.

8. Were there any significant career path changes for you after the ERA-EDTA Fellowship?
Yes, Now I am also the Principal Investigator of the project “Arterial function and structure in Inflammatory Bowel Disease”, Ministry of Health, Italy (GR-2011-02349066) ( ).
