Summary Reports from ERA-EDTA COVID-19 Webinars COVID-19 infection – Some implications for nephrology Presented by Annette Bruchfeld ![]() Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, primarily manifesting as an acute respiratory illness with interstitial and alveolar pneumonia. It emerged as an epidemic in China, but spread worldwide within months, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a global pandemic in March 2020. According to the latest reports most patients with new COVID-19 have mild to moderate clinical signs of infection, presenting with a flu-like illness. Still, about 20% of cases have severe disease, with dyspnoea, respiratory or circulatory issues, or critical condition, with respiratory failure, septic shock and/or multiple organ failure.

COVID-19 and ACE inhibitors and ARBs Presented by Patrick Mark ![]() Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are used by 6.6 million people worldwide for the treatment of high blood pressure and diabetic kidney disease. Recently, it has been hypothesized that these widely prescribed medications could increase the risk of severe viral pneumonia with respiratory failure and even death in patients with new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

COVID-19 Registry - the Spanish experience Presented by Emilio Sanchez ![]() An unprecendented outbreak of pneumonia, caused by a betacoronavirus named SARS-CoV-2, urged the World Health Organization to proclaim a pandemic of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The first cases of the disease were registered in the Chinese province of Hubei in December 2019, but it spread rapidly to the rest of the world. The first case of COVID-19 in Spain was registered on January 31st in a German tourist spending his holiday on the island of La Gomera. Two and a half months later there were 177.633 registered cases in Spain, accounting for nearly twenty percent of all cases in Europe at that moment.
