The officers of the European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) (Carmine Zoccali, President; Ivan Rychlik, Secretary- Treasurer; Danilo Fliser, Renal Science Chair/Chairman of the Administrative Offices; Ziad Massy, Clinical Nephrology Governance Chair/Chair of the Registry and Denis Fouque, Editor-in-Chief of NDT - “Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation”) together with the entire ERA-EDTA Council are very pleased to present this report on the activities of our Society, essentially regarding the past year (2018). We are very pleased to confirm that during the last year all the ERA-EDTA activities have been very successful and active, furthermore 2018 was yet another good year also for the financial consolidation of the Society.
The ERA-EDTA Council is working hard to give the members the opportunities to learn, teach, perform research and publish their publications. At the same time, we aim towards the highest scientific level of our activities and for this reason there have been important optimizations put in place within the various branches of the scientific activities of the Society to allow an even better performance, in particular in 2018 two new committees were created by the Council: the Nephrology and Public Policy Committee (NPPC) and the Green Nephrology Committee (GNC). The main objective of the NPPC is to produce strategic documents and periodic state-of-the-art documents (papers) related to the evolving knowledge in Epidemiology and Clinical Nephrology, as well as to identify possible research hot topics to explore in the coming years. The strategic documents produced by the NPPC will help the Council to define future strategies/plans for topics and financial supports for research projects that are needed to benefit the nephrology patients in Europe. Instead, the aim of the first project of the GNC is to create awareness among nephrologists of the environmental impact of dialysis and find possible optimization on lowering this impact and finally raise awareness with policy makers/governments so that legislation can be modified to take into consideration this important and neglected aspect of medicine also with regard to the medical curriculum of health professionals. The first results regarding these two new committees will be seen in 2019. Another new initiative of 2018 was the presentation of a very special session held on the last day of our Congress: “Nephrology Pearls” which presented the most up-dated features of specific topics in the field of nephrology linked to the best presentations of the Congress. In 2018 the Council had four meetings: London, UK (February 22-24), Copenhagen, Denmark (May 22-23 and May 27) and Naples, Italy (October 11-13). Below you can find reports from all the specific bodies and activities of ERA-EDTA performed in 2018: behind every one of these there are hardworking members of our Society assisted by our staff and for all these efforts we would like to thank them very much.
Finally, we are delighted to welcome you to Budapest for the next exciting ERA-EDTA Congress, but would also like to encourage you to participate actively in any of the many initiatives mentioned below.
