Effects of Vitamin D supplementation on vascular calcification progression in CKD patients with hypovitaminosis D

Long-term cholecalciferol supplementation was safe and effective in restoring vitamin D levels in predialysis patients with CKD. vitamin D supplementation did not attenuate vascular calcification progression in CKD patients with hypovitaminosis D.

A recently published study evaluated the effects of long-term cholecalciferol supplementation on vascular calcification in nondialysis patients with CKD stages 3–4 with hypovitaminosis D. Results showed that long-term cholecalciferol supplementation was safe and effective in restoring vitamin D levels in predialysis patients with CKD. Nevertheless, vitamin D supplementation did not attenuate vascular calcification progression in CKD patients with hypovitaminosis D.
