The 59th ERA Congress promoted sustainable development and global responsibility in different ways: the aim was to encourage environmentally friendly behaviours and to raise awareness on the importance of a healthy environment for healthy kidneys.

All medical societies and scientific organisations should urgently undertake useful long-lasting actions when it comes to conferences and educational initiatives. The pandemic has shown us that digital innovation can open the door to a more sustainable future for medical conferences: this is a major reason why ERA has decided to organise a hybrid event, in Paris and virtually, to improve the carbon footprint due to the impact of conference travel.

Our efforts for a sustainable conference

  • The Faculty hotel and the Staff hotel were located conveniently within walking distance from the Paris Convention Centre, which is also easily reached by public transportation.
  • To avoid individual taxi trips, speakers and invited guests were provided with travel passes for public transportation and had the opportunity to share shuttles from the airport to the Paris Convention Centre during the same timeframe.
  • No plastic badges were provided at the Registration desk.
  • The final programme wasn’t printed but was available for download on the Congress website.
  • The ERA signage was mainly digital thanks to digital totems, lightboxes and ledwalls.
  • ERA favoured local suppliers and partners (installation, A/V equipment, catering operators).
  • We kept all congress materials to minimum.
  • ERA avoided using unnecessary decorations that might create excessive waste.
  • Latex-free PP carpeting: the used carpets can be fully converted into a pure high-grade recyclate.
  • Recycling was done efficiently at Paris Convention Centre and the waste policy was also made clear to visitors with different bins.

In addition to ecological initiatives, ERA also supported sustainable development in terms of social responsibility:

  • The ERA Congress supported multidisciplinary encounters and diversity perspectives (e.g. prayer room, breastfeeding room).
  • Several price categories were offered to make the Congress accessible even for participants from low-income countries and to enhance the participation of students and young nephrologists.
  • The ERA Congress strongly promoted gender balance.
  • ERA took measures to ensure health security (hygiene, thorough cleaning of facilities, etc.) according to the global health situation: discover more on hygiene & safety here.

Sustainable development at the Paris Convention Centre

The Paris Convention Centre is a contemporary conference space designed to host major international events. Located inside Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, at only 15 minutes from the Eiffel Tower, it is managed by Viparis.

As far as sustainability is concerned, Viparis aims at reducing the ecological footprint and ensuring that each event leaves a positive legacy, by offering an increasing number of sustainable services and by cultivating and valuing the staff.
