Rumen’s story

My journey with the Young Nephrologists' Platform (YNP) began with a desire to connect more deeply with peers across Europe who shared a passion for advancing nephrology. I received an email about a YNP meeting in Milan and decided to attend to meet nephrologists from across the continent. The experience was incredibly positive and beneficial, and once I understood what YNP stood for, I knew I wanted to become a National Representative. I believed this role would help get more young people from my country involved, as the experience is truly valuable—a friendly environment where you can grow and develop.

As a YNP National Representative and Secretary of the Bulgarian Nephrology Association, I serve as a bridge between ERA and the young nephrology community in my country. My responsibilities include promoting YNP initiatives, encouraging local young nephrologists to engage with ERA, and representing their voices and needs on an international platform. I also support the organization of educational events and foster collaborations that enhance learning and professional exchange.

This role has been extremely rewarding, both personally and professionally. One of the greatest takeaways has been the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with colleagues across Europe. I’ve already formed strong friendships, which are incredibly important from every perspective—personal, academic, and professional. It’s also been very fulfilling to see increasing interest from early-career colleagues in YNP activities. Helping them get involved and seeing that there is a potential for the network to grow is one of the satisfying aspects of my role.

My role as a National Representative has broadened my perspective on the field of nephrology and opened the door to meaningful academic collaborations. It has strengthened my commitment to lifelong learning and played a key role in my professional growth, encouraging me to take on new challenges with greater confidence. Above all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve formed through my involvement with YNP have been truly invaluable.
