Public Affairs & Advocacy

ERA strives to connect the needs of kidney patients with public decision-makers and policy-making bodies at the EU and national levels, and support advocacy actions at international and national levels

Advocating for kidney care

Kidney disease affects more than 850 million people worldwide, yet it remains underrecognised in public health agendas, underfunded in research, and insufficiently addressed in health policy. It is one of the fastest-growing non-communicable diseases and, without action, is projected to become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide by 2050 — and the third in Western Europe. Changing this reality requires more than scientific excellence — it demands a sustained, collective voice at the highest levels of decision-making.

The European Renal Association (ERA) is committed to translating its scientific and clinical expertise into meaningful policy impact. Through engagement with European institutions, national governments, and health authorities, ERA advocates for improved prevention, early diagnosis, innovation, and equitable access to treatment. Awareness raising is also central to ERA’s work, through campaigns targeting policymakers, health professionals, and the public.

ERA does not act alone. As an active member of key advocacy coalitions and alliances, ERA works with partners committed to patient-centred, evidence-based health policy. ERA is a founding member of the European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA) and collaborates closely with its members to place kidney health on the European agenda. ERA is also part of the BioMed Alliance, promoting excellence in biomedical research and increased funding, and collaborates globally with the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

The EU Cardiovascular Health Plan: the Safe Hearts Plan

ERA participated in the Task Force on defining a cardiovascular–renal–metabolic health check. The recommendations developed by the Task Force and submitted to the European Commission use the term “cardiovascular–renal–metabolic health check” and include screening for chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The UN Political Declaration on NCDs

ERA welcomes the adoption of the United Nations Political Declaration on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and the promotion of mental health and well-being, which for the first time recognises kidney disease as one of the most burdensome NCDs and its strong links with diabetes.

ASN - ERA - ISN collaboration

On June 1,  2016, three major nephrology societies — the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the European Renal Association (ERA), and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) ― signed a declaration of collaboration. The organizations agreed that kidney disease is a global challenge that respects no boundaries or borders. Therefore, all available synergies should be used to fight kidney disease and improve the standard of care for kidney patients worldwide.

To create the best possible synergy, the three societies agreed to collaborate in:

  • helping physicians who have just started careers as nephrologists or are considering this possibility, locally, regionally and nationally
  • providing kidney professionals worldwide with more consistent, complete and up-to-date information about kidney diseases and treatments
  • advocating to ensure access to care and to harmonize efforts to prevent and treat kidney disease worldwide
  • creating joint initiatives to leverage the societies’ respective strengths.

Kidney Support Initiative Task Force

During a joint ASN, ERA, and ISN Leadership meeting on December 4, 2023, in Washington, it was agreed to develop a clear plan to strengthen cooperation among the three societies in response to natural and man-made disasters.

The Task Force aims to develop a unified emergency response strategy, enhance global preparedness, strengthen collaboration with partners, and ensure rapid, coordinated action with effective resource mobilisation and clinical guidance.

EKHA

EKHA

EKHA is an alliance of four societies created in 2007 to focus the attention of the political community and, through the media, of people at large, on the burden of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) considering patients’ morbidity/mortality as well as the socio-economic impact of dialysis and transplantation in Europe: besides the ERA, the European Kidney Patients’ Federation (EKPF, former CEAPIR), the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses’ Association/European Renal Care Association (EDTNA/ERCA) and Dutch Kidney Foundation (DKF) are EKHA management committee members.

The EKHA management committee, which includes two representatives of ERA nominated by the Council, works closely with the people involved in the European health organization to raise awareness about CKD throughout Europe.

Awareness Campaigns

Led by the Strong Kidneys Committee of the European Renal Association (ERA) and in collaboration with our partners, the Strong Kidneys initiative is a European-wide movement dedicated to raising awareness about kidney health.

Our mission is to:

  • Educate both the public and healthcare professionals on the important role kidneys play in overall health
  • Promote the early detection and prevention of chronic kidney disease
  • Empower individuals to adopt simple, sustainable lifestyle changes that support kidney health

Legacy Projects

A Congress should leave more than memories — it should leave a legacy. Through our schools outreach project, we connect with local students to raise awareness of kidney health, healthy lifestyles, and medical science, creating lasting value for the host city and its young people.
