Joana’s story

Alongside my medical career, I have been an assistant lecturer at the ICBAS (School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences) of the University of Porto. I’ve always had a strong interest in the education of future doctors and, later on, in mentoring residents. I first learned about YNP through an ERA newsletter, and I immediately identified with its initiatives. As soon as the opportunity arose to apply for the role of National Representative, I eagerly submitted my application to get involved.

As a YNP National Representative and Secretary of the As the YNP Representative for Portugal, my main responsibilities include promoting YNP and its initiatives within the country, improving communication between ERA/YNP and our national society, and providing support to young Portuguese nephrologists.

This role has given me the invaluable opportunity to collaborate with colleagues who have impressive backgrounds and extensive experience in the field. Collaborating with Fernando Caravaca-Fontán and Professor Manuel Praga was an incredibly enriching experience, and it was a great honor to co-author a paper that was published in CKJ. Additionally, my participation in the first ERA Education Meeting allowed me to engage with renowned experts.

In addition, I had the opportunity to select and reach out to Portuguese mentors for the YNP Mentorship Program and I have also worked to strengthen the relationship between young nephrologists from Portugal and Brazil, organizing meetings and facilitating exchange programs between the two countries.

This experience has been crucial to my personal and professional growth. It has helped me develop stronger communication and organizational skills. Networking opportunities have been invaluable, allowing me to meet and collaborate with renowned nephrologists both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, my involvement has enriched my academic work, allowing me to contribute as an author and reviewer for ERA journals, as well as a speaker at national and international events. All of these aspects have undoubtedly helped me grow as a Nephrologist.
