Fiber intake and health in people with chronic kidney disease
MISSION
The European Renal Nutrition (ERN) working group aims to conduct research on the impact of lifestyle, diet, nutrient homeostasis and protein-enery wasting (PEW) management on chronic kidney disease (CKD) outcomes. European research on this field is already of high quality, but hampered by reduced funding, small patient cohorts and scientific isolation. We aim to create strong and multinational European collaborations to deepen in our understanding of nutrition and CKD complications.
Why we need a renal nutrition working group at the ERA, Denis Fouque and Juan-Jesus Carrero, on behalf of the European Renal Nutrition Working Group, ERA-EDTA Follow us – Year 11 Issue 26 May 2015
AIMS of the working group:
- To improve and to disseminate knowledge in the field of Renal Nutrition.
- To collaborate with other sections of the ERA (the European Renal Best Practice, the ERA Registry and the EURODOPPS) to revisit clinical practice recommendations.
- To collaborate on educational activities on renal nutrition within the ERA Congresses, CME courses, position papers and review articles.
- To collaborate with other working groups on nutritional initiatives. To work with the Young Nephrologists’ Platform promoting supervision, research exchanges, clinical training and educational activities for young researchers and practitioners in the field of Renal Nutrition. Finally and overall, to stimulate joint initiatives with other European and International Societies in the field of Renal Nutrition.

HOW TO JOIN THE WORKING GROUP
Being a ordinary member of the ERN Working Group means being part of a network which facilitates exchanges of ideas on basic science research and new treatment protocols.
Becoming an ordinary member of the ERN Working Group is FREE OF CHARGE. Ordinary members must be ERA members and be persons with a proven interest in the research area covered by the WG. Exceptions are possible only for non-nephrologists.
By joining the ERN Working Group you will receive constant updates on the Working Group initiatives be included in the Directory of ERN Working Groups’ ordinary members and start networking with colleagues from all over the world.

ONGOING PROJECTS
- International DELPHI Consensus on Nutritional Treatment in non-Dialysis CKD – The project involved ERN ordinary members, ERA members as well as members of International Societies and Patients’ Associations and its final aim is to achieve an authoritative consensus on the main issues related to the nutritional treatment in non-dialysis CKD patients by mean of the robust DELPHI methodology. A Multilanguage survey named Survey to define the priority of the topics related to the nutritional treatment in non-dialysis CKD was circulated in 2018 and 1,800 individuals participated. 1,224 responders completed the questionnaire; the collected information will contribute to the development of best practice programmes to improve the quality of care and outcomes of CKD patients. The results of the IDON-Study survey were presented in the session ‘What should CKD patients eat?’ at the 56th ERA Congress (click here to watch the presentation) and at the Kidney Week 2019 of the ASN (click here to read the abstract).
- Dietary intake and adherence to dietary recommendations in European dialysis patients: the diet-HD study , submitted by ERN was selected to be one of the projects to be supported by the ERA. The Association is in fact grating one young member of the ERA, Dr GUOBIN Su, the possibility to be involved in the project by providing her a fellowship to work on your project/study.
- The effect of high-volume online haemodiafiltration on nutritional status and body composition: the ProtEin Stores prEservaTion (PESET) study. The study was carried out by the Universitat de València, Spain with Pablo Molina as Principal Investigator and reports that online-HDF can improve nutritional status and counteract protein-energy wasting in hemodialysis patients.
